The Adult Foster Care (AFC) program’s caregivers could not have anticipated the scene as they walked into the first annual appreciation luncheon. It was like stepping off the plane into a tropical paradise. Palm trees, pineapples, beach balls, and calypso music filled the room. Each caregiver was greeted with a pina colada and a lei was placed around their neck. When each guest was asked to pick their favorite vacation spot, a few said they were currently in it!
In true tropical spirit, lunch included barbeque chicken and fried plantains. One of the honored caregivers, Mr. Singh, was kind enough to prepare and share spring rolls and lo mein; both were a big hit. The Caregiver Advisors, Leslie Ahern and Damon Syphers, then educated the caregivers on how to build resiliency against common challenges and emphasized the importance for caregivers to take care of themselves. There was also a demonstration by yoga instructor, Gena Bean. She modeled some deep breathing exercises that caregivers could use as relaxation tools. By the end, Gena literally helped the caregivers to unwind by bringing out their inner lions! ARRRHH!
The day closed with the unveiling of the new Shared Living video featuring Mr. Singh and Mr. Sok. The video exemplifies and honors all caregivers who participate in the program. Everyone left the event with raffle prizes, pineapples, and a re-energized spirits.
